Community gardens play an essential role in addressing local and state issues related to food, sustainability, environmental justice, and underserved communities. In this way, community gardens are essential for promoting community resilience, social cohesion, and sustainable food systems. Oregon is home to several food deserts, where residents lack access to fresh and healthy foods due to an absence of grocery stores or other sources of affordable produce. Community gardens address this issue by providing a source of fresh, nutritious produce to residents who may not have access otherwise. Additionally, community gardens serve as spaces for education, bringing people together to learn about healthy eating and sustainable farming practices. Localized community gardens are also important for promoting environmental justice for marginalized communities who have been disproportionately affected by environmental issues by strengthening local food sovereignty. Community gardens across Oregon facilitate increased access to healthy food which is essential for strengthening independent support systems. Food sovereignty and access to community gardens combat inequalities by providing a space for communities to grow and take control of their food. Additionally, community gardens are increasingly essential for promoting sustainability. By growing food locally, communities reduce their reliance on industrial agriculture, reduce their local carbon footprint, and promote increased sustainability in food production and transportation. Community gardens have additional ecological benefits as they serve as habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects, help communities restore ecological diversity, and support the health of local ecosystems.

The goals of this project are twofold. First, to create a comprehensive directory and map of community gardens throughout Oregon, providing valuable information to Oregon residents and community organizations. Our directory will serve as a resource for identifying community gardens in localized areas. Second, to highlight the essential work being done at community gardens across the state, showcasing their essential work in community resilience, social cohesion, and sustainable food systems. By identifying specific examples of successful community gardens and their impact, this project aims to showcase their essential work.
